The challenge
AgriGrow had a vision to connect smallholder farmers with agricultural inputs, market prices, and expert advisory — but no technical team and limited runway. Existing solutions were either too expensive for smallholder farmers or required smartphone apps that didn't work offline in rural farming areas.
The founders needed an MVP within two months to secure seed funding, with M-Pesa payment integration, crop advisory content, and a USSD fallback for farmers without smartphones.
Our approach
LesterTechLabs scoped a focused MVP: farmer registration, crop advisory library, input ordering with M-Pesa payment, and a USSD menu for basic price checks. We prioritized offline content delivery and lightweight data usage over feature richness.
The stack was chosen for speed and scalability — Django REST API, React Native mobile app, and deployment on Lester PaaS for zero DevOps overhead during the seed stage.
Implementation
Delivered in an 8-week sprint:
• React Native app with offline crop advisory articles and push notifications
• M-Pesa STK Push integration for input purchases and subscription payments
• USSD menu (*384#) for market price checks on feature phones
• Farmer admin dashboard for AgriGrow operations team
• Analytics tracking farmer engagement and conversion funnels
Deployed on Lester PaaS with automatic SSL, managed PostgreSQL, and Git-push deployments enabling the startup team to iterate independently after handoff.
Results
AgriGrow launched to 15,000 registered farmers within six months across three counties. The MVP secured $500K in seed funding based on traction metrics. M-Pesa payment volume reached $120K monthly by month five.
USSD price checks averaged 8,000 daily sessions, proving demand from farmers without smartphones. The startup transitioned to a retainer partnership with LesterTechLabs for Series A feature development.
